Vocalist Neža Okorn, a creative force in the European jazz scene known for her imaginative improvisations and original compositions, brings a voice that’s as expressive as a plot twist in a noir novel.
At the keys is Larry Lofquist, Detroit-born pianist and composer whose résumé ranges from smoky barroom swing to more ambitious works, including jazz ensemble pieces and even opera. Expect a harmonic world that’s as unpredictable as the Viennese weather — but far more satisfying.
Together, they’ll weave standards and originals into a set that feels like cocktail-hour conversation — sophisticated, a little brassy, and unafraid to surprise you. Consider this your official excuse to sidestep chores and let the music do the talking.
When Neža Okorn moved to Vienna from her native Ljubljana, she quickly „established herself is one of the absolute shooting stars among vocalists, who makes a lasting impression on the audience during her performances,“ in the words of former Zwe impresario Christof Klein. She has appeared locally and abroad with her own projects, with German pianist Urs Hagar, with MindTree, and recently a series of concerts with Tomi Purich, performing not only her interpretation of jazz standards, but original compositions and modern treatments of folklore. In addition to performances, lead singer in the Retro 60s Project recording with Larry Lofquist, Neza is currently finishing her debut CD.
Larry Lofquist has been playing piano professionally since the 1970s and began composing songs when he was 11. Previously he played clarinet, saxophone and flute until those instruments were either stolen or sold to pay the rent. He has done a lot of solo piano work, and he enjoys accompanying singers. Musically, his sparse style displays rather rich harmonic textures and a love of melody.
